The UK Government's sudden "emergency brake" has ended academic futures overnight. Write to your MP and demand an exemption for students and researchers.
Write to your MP now ↓On 4 March 2026 the Home Office announced an unprecedented "emergency brake" on student visas for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, taking effect from 26 March 2026. The policy was framed as a response to a rise in asylum claims from people on legal visa routes.
But the numbers tell a different story for Sudan. The Home Office's own figures show approximately 23% of Sudanese student visa-holders between 2020–2024 made asylum claims — meaning 77% complied fully. Independent immigration lawyers have noted the absolute figures are very small. The blanket ban punishes genuine scholars, Chevening candidates, and postgraduate researchers whose only connection to the asylum system is their nationality.
Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating war since April 2023 — a proxy war fuelled by external powers, not a simple internal conflict. Its students are not exploiting the UK system — they are its future doctors, engineers, and academics. Cutting them off severs Sudan's route to post-war recovery.
Chevening scholarship interviews for Sudanese applicants have already been suspended. Postgraduate researchers mid-way through their studies face uncertainty. This campaign asks MPs to push for a targeted exemption for verified scholars and students.
